Understanding the treatment

What is scalp micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, is a cosmetic tattooing technique that uses fine needles to place small dots of pigment in the scalp. These dots mimic the appearance of hair follicles.

Scalp micropigmentation pigments are cosmetic-grade, permanent inks.

In thinning areas, the pigment can reduce the contrast between hair and visible scalp. On a closely shaved head, it can create the appearance of short stubble and a defined hairline. Suitable healed scars may also be camouflaged.

Appearance, rather than new hair

SMP does not grow hair, replace hair follicles or stop hair loss. It changes the appearance of the scalp without hair transplant surgery.

A plan tailored to you

Your consultation covers pigment shade, placement, hairline design where appropriate, and the number of sessions. Treatment is built gradually, with healing time between appointments.

Healing and long-term care

Results vary and pigment can fade over time, so maintenance may be needed. SMP carries tattooing risks, including infection, pigment reactions and an unwanted cosmetic result. Jeff will discuss suitability, risks and written aftercare before you decide.

Who may benefit

Who is scalp micropigmentation for?

Scalp micropigmentation is a type of micropigmentation (permanent makeup). The treatment can create the appearance of thicker hair in people who have:

SMP changes appearance; it does not treat the underlying cause of hair loss. Suitability is assessed individually at consultation. Medical conditions, ongoing cancer treatment, birthmarks and scalp changes may require assessment or clearance from your healthcare provider before treatment.

Find your approach

Designed around your hair, scalp and goals.

01 / Density

Thinning hair

Explore the appearance of fuller coverage in thinning areas, including the crown and part line. SMP adds visual density; it does not grow hair.

02 / Definition

The closely shaved look

Discuss a subtle follicle effect and hairline design that works with your features and preferred hairstyle.

03 / Camouflage

Visible scalp scars

Assess whether pigment can soften the contrast of a fully healed scalp scar. Suitability depends on the scar and skin.

Before you decide

Your questions, answered.

How much does SMP cost?

Your complimentary consultation includes an individual quote based on the area, complexity and planned sessions. You will know what is included before you book. Portfolio model pricing is agreed separately.

Is SMP a hair growth treatment?

No. SMP places pigment in the scalp to create a visual follicle effect. It does not restore hair growth or change the texture of your hair.

How many appointments will I need?

Your plan may involve multiple treatment sessions and a healed-results review. Jeff will discuss timing and what is included at consultation.

What should I know about healing and maintenance?

SMP is a form of cosmetic tattooing. Discomfort, healing, fading and outcomes vary. Your consultation covers risks, suitability, written aftercare and potential future maintenance.

Do models have to show their face?

Photo framing and face visibility are discussed before you join. Any agreed portfolio use is documented in a separate photo permission form.
